No one doubts the rockets which fell on Nahariya January 8 carried a solid Hizbullah endorsement. It is unlikely they came from the Hizbullah arsenal. They were old and outdated. Neverthless Israel returned the fire with a measured response. There is no doubt the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Northern Command is on full alert and any sign of terror activity from within Lebanon will trigger immediate Israel fire.
“Israel holds the government of Lebanon and the Lebanese armed forces responsible for preventing rocket fire into Israel,” an IDF statement said. There is little doubt Israel is looking beyond the government in Lebanon and watching with interest the actions of the terror groups in the area. Hizbullah and other terrorists groups based in Lebanon have always been considered part of the Israel war with Hamas according to Israel spokesperson Col (Res) Miri Eisin. In an interview with Bridges for Peace Eisin said Hizbullah has already been working with Hamas teaching and supplying them. “They are showing them the extremists’ way,” she said.
“Israel has to make its own decisions on how we want to deal with the extremists in the north and the extremists in the south.” she said in our BFP War Report. (Listen to BFP Israel Mosaic Radio at www.bridgesforpeace.com) “We have made it very clear, we are not going to succumb to terror,” she said. Israel is not interested in opening an additional front but Israel will protect its citizens, she went on to say.
Colonel Eisin said Israel disagrees with the international community in the whole area of compromise. “We disagree. You cannot compromise with terrorists,” she said. “Israel wants to live in stability and in an area which is quiet but we are going to have to make our choices on how we arrive there,” she said.
In the north Shlomi Mayor Gabi Na’aman said the municipality cancelled school on Thursday. Certainly all eyes will be on Israel and its response to this latest development.
Israel also watched with interest as senior Iranian politician Ali Larijani met with Hamas political leader Khaled Meshal in Damascus. Meshal with several Hamas leaders met with Larijani until the early hours Thursday. The meeting took place at the Iranian Embassy.
Earlier Larijani met with leaders of Islamic Jihad, another Palestinian group with close ties to Iran.
