A man identified as a former student is believed responsible for a massacre at a German high school Wednesday that left 16 people dead. Nine of those killed were students, three were teachers and a passer-by was also caught in his initial rampage of rage in the city of Winnedden, near Stuttgart.
The gunman walked into two classrooms clad in black and opened fire. He managed to flee after carjacking an escape vehicle but for some reason he let those passengers go. He made it about 40 kilometres from the scene before authorities caught up to him.
But he wasn't finished. He decided to shoot it out with police, killing two more innocent bystanders and seriously wounding two officers, before marksmen finally shot him dead.
Authorities have identified the killer only as "Tim K.", who graduated from the Albertville high school along with about a thousand others a year ago. There's been no motive for the crime, which the police chief called "a bloodbath."
The incident was the worst school spree killing in the country since 2002, when a 19-year-old gunned down 12 teachers, a secretary, two students and a lawman in the city of Erfurt.
